Frequently Asked Questions
What garments or fabrics can be used?
Because each Josephine & Co. piece is created from personal and often irreplaceable materials, we review every garment with care before production begins. Fabrics such as cotton, polyester blends, jersey-knit, flannels, linen blends, velvet, and denim typically work beautifully for heirloom pillow covers. More delicate or complex materials — including satin, silk, lace, sheer fabrics, sequins, beading, formalwear, wedding dresses, and fragile vintage garments — may require additional consultation, stabilization, or design adjustments. In some cases, these materials may also require an additional labor fee due to the extra time, handling, and care required. Our goal is always to preserve the integrity of your materials while creating a finished piece that feels refined, lasting, and worthy of the memories it holds. If you have a question on if a specific fabric or garment will work, please send a description and picture to Josephine@josephineandcoheirlooms.com
Will my pillow look exactly like the garment?
Each piece is custom designed based on the garment structure, fabric condition, and layout. Our goal is to preserve meaningful details while creating a beautiful finished product. We make every effort to align directional fabrics, though garment construction may prevent patterns from being perfectly centered or matched.
Do you return unused fabric?
Unused materials can be returned upon request for an additional fee. Otherwise, remaining materials may be responsibly recycled or discarded.
Are the pillow covers removable?
Designs include zippers or buttons for removable, washable covers.
How should I care for or wash my pillow cover?
Care for pillow covers according to the garment's original manufacturer instructions. Do not steam. If machine washable, use the delicate cycle.
How does the design fee work?
A $90 design fee is required to begin your custom heirloom order. This fee allows us to thoughtfully review your submitted garments or textiles, assess the condition and layout possibilities, recommend the best size and shape, and prepare your final project details before production begins. If you choose to move forward, the $90 design fee will be credited toward your final order balance. If the project is not finalized, materials are not received within the requested timeframe, or the order is cancelled before production begins, the design fee is retained for the review, planning, and communication already completed. If materials have been submitted and need to be returned, return shipping is the customer's responsibility.
How are completed custom heirlooms priced?
Custom heirlooms are typically priced based on the type of piece, the number of garments or textiles used, the condition and complexity of the materials, and any special design details requested. Because each heirloom is individually created, final pricing is provided after reviewing the project details and confirming the scope of work.
Custom heirloom pillows begin at $145. Standard heirloom pillows are typically $145–$195 and include a coordinating pillow form to arrive huggable and display ready. More complex designs begin at $225.
Only want one pillow but multiple pillow covers? Additional heirloom *covers-only* from the same garment collection begin at $125 and are beautifully packaged flat for gifting, seasonal variety or safekeeping.
How long does the process take?
Turnaround times vary depending on project volume and complexity. Current estimated timelines will be communicated before production begins.
Why is the finished pillow cover slightly smaller than the pillow form?
For the best finished look, each Josephine & Co. pillow cover is intentionally made slightly smaller than the pillow form it is designed to hold. For example, a pillow made for a 20x20 pillow form will typically have a finished cover size of approximately 19x19 inches. This allows the insert to fill the cover fully, creating a softer, fuller shape without loose fabric, sagging corners, or a flat appearance. Because each piece is handmade from meaningful garments or textiles, final measurements may vary slightly depending on the fabric, garment structure, stabilization needs, and design layout.
What is your return policy?
Because each Josephine & Co. heirloom is custom made from personal garments and meaningful textiles, we do not offer traditional returns or exchanges once production has begun. However, we do stand behind our craftsmanship. If there is a workmanship concern or your finished piece does not reflect the agreed-upon order details, please contact us within 7 days of delivery so we can review the issue and determine the best way to make it right. Natural variations, signs of wear, fabric texture, fading, staining, and other characteristics from the original materials are part of the heirloom nature of each piece and are not considered defects.
What is included in the Make It Right Promise?
Depending on the situation, Josephine & Co. may offer one or more of the following at our discretion:
- a repair or adjustment
- a remake, if sufficient materials remain available
- a partial refund
- a replacement of non-sentimental components, such as a pillow insert or zipper, when appropriate
- another reasonable solution based on the nature of the concern
Because heirloom materials are often aged, delicate, worn, or irreplaceable, natural variations, fabric characteristics, visible signs of prior wear, minor asymmetry, texture differences, fading, staining, or other qualities carried from the original garment are not considered defects. These details are part of the story of the finished piece.
Our Make It Right Promise does NOT cover:
- changes of mind after production has begun
- natural characteristics of the submitted garments or textiles
- damage related to the age, condition, fragility, or prior use of submitted materials
- customer-approved design choices
- slight variations common to handmade items
- delays, loss, theft, or damage caused by shipping carriers
- damage caused by improper use, laundering, storage, or handling after delivery
Please do not return an item without contacting us first. Because each piece is custom and often made from irreplaceable materials, all returns, repairs, or adjustments must be reviewed and approved by Josephine & Co. in advance.
Third-Party Trademarks
Josephine & Co. creates custom heirloom pieces from customer-supplied garments and textiles. Some submitted materials may contain third-party logos, trademarks, team names, school names, brand names, or artwork.
Josephine & Co. is not affiliated with, sponsored by, endorsed by, or licensed by any third-party brand, sports team, league, school, organization, or trademark owner. Any third-party marks appearing on finished keepsakes are part of the customer’s original submitted materials and are used only at the customer’s request as part of a custom transformation service.
Our Make It Right Promise
Every Josephine & Co. piece is thoughtfully handcrafted from meaningful garments and textiles entrusted to our care. Because each heirloom is custom-made from personal materials, we do not offer traditional returns, exchanges, or refunds once production has begun.
That said, your trust matters deeply to us. If something is not right with the craftsmanship of your finished piece, we want the opportunity to make it right.
Please contact us within 7 days of receiving your order if you believe there is a workmanship issue or if the finished piece does not reflect the agreed-upon order details. We may ask for photos and a brief description so we can understand the concern and determine the best next step.
"Josephine & Co. made me the most amazing pillow out of my dad and sister's pajama fabric. They both passed away from cancer, and having a piece of them that's so comforting and beautifully made means the world to me. Seriously, if you're looking for a special and heartfelt gift, you've found the right place! "
